Trio Formations explores the evolution of the piano trio structure, from its classical origins in the piano sonata to its post-1980’s resurgence in the contemporary chamber music repertoire. The piano trio is a genre apart, distinguished by asymmetry and timbral diversity. The instrumentation itself poses a compositional puzzle: how to create a collaborative ideal, if at all? Unique solutions abound, from single-instrument primacy (Haydn, Füting) to the disunion of string and keyboard sound worlds (Furrer, Swithinbank); a duet between keyboard and strings (Furrer, Schubert) to thoroughly integrated, complementary timbres (Pagh-Paan, Füting).
